Meet Our Host:

South To South Wine Importers is based in New Orleans and focuses exclusively on importing and distributing quality South African wines in the South-Eastern USA. Their growing portfolio consists of estate-produced wines, from wineries that are family-owned and operated, and who practice wine-making that are minimal-intervention, terroir-driven, and mindful of integrity and sustainability across the winemaking process from vineyard to table. The passion for South African wines lies deep for owner Suzaan Laing, herself an attorney from Cape Town, who has worked in her professional capacity with South African wineries and the wine industry at large (in addition to growing up among them, and studying at the University of Stellenbosch, in the heart of wine country). She has unique experiences, connections to, and knowledge of the South African wine industry.

Since the fall of apartheid in 1990, the wine industry in the country has undergone seismic shifts toward distinctiveness, innovation, and a successful drive to produce high-quality wines. It is the oldest of the New World wine-producing countries (dating its wine-making back to 1659) and has the oldest wine-growing soils in the world (650 million-year-old weathered granite). Its industry standards (administered by the Wine & Spirt Board) are among the most rigorous in the world. With a unique global location, where the cold currents of the Southern Atlantic Ocean meet the warm currents of the Indian Ocean, and a Mediterranean climate that allows slow, full ripening of the grapes, its wines are taking top spots on the world wine stage and is commanding the attention of wine lovers in the USA. The breadth of varietals produced (ranging from Chardonnay to Chenin Blanc, and from Pinotage to Pinot Noir), the fearlessness for making different blends, the unique qualities of old bush vines and heritage vineyards, and culture and passion for winemaking that run through generations, are things that wine lovers in Jackson must come and experience!
